Yankee Dental 2013 Award Winners

Francis A. Connor, Jr.

Etherington Award
Francis A. Connor Jr., DDS

The prestigious 2013 Etherington Award will be presented to Dr. Francis A. Connor Jr. of North Kingstown, RI. This award is given annually in recognition of New England dentists who dedicate much of their professional lives to furthering the high ideals and objectives of organized dentistry, which Dr. Connor has done throughout his career. He received his DDS from Georgetown University and his certificate in oral surgery from New York University Postgraduate School. Having served on multiple committees for the Rhode Island Dental Association and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, he was president of the RIDA from 2009 to 2010, president of the AAOMS from 1988 to1989, and president of the Rhode Island Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 1981 to 1982. He is currently chair of the Rhode Island Dental Foundation. Dr. Connor maintains a private oral surgery practice in Pawtucket, RI, while working as chief of the division of dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery at Rhode Island Hospital, where he is also on the Board of Governors. He has been published in several editions of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a clinical associate professor of surgery at Brown University School of Medicine. In 2011, Dr. Connor was presented with the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award from Brown Medical School.

 Herbert Bader

Clinician of the Year Award
Herbert Bader, DDS

Herbert Bader, DDS has been a featured lecturer at Yankee Dental Congress for over 20 years. He is a graduate of New York University Dental School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine postdoctoral program in periodontology. He is a fellow of both the American and International Colleges of Dentistry, Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society, and a diplomate of the American Academy of Osseointegration. Dr. Bader has been nominated as one of the top one hundred clinician/educators by Dentistry Today for 2007-2010, and most recently, 2011-2013. He holds the position of lecturer in periodontology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and is widely published in the literature. As an actively practicing periodontist, Dr. Bader maintains busy practices in Plymouth and Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

 Ruthann Zamarro

Hygienist of the Year Award
Ruthann Zamarro, RDH

Ruthann Zamarro graduated from Broome Community College in Binghamton, NY, in 1971 and has been practicing dental hygiene for four decades. She has served as Worcester District Dental Hygienists' Association secretary for 15 years and as Massachusetts Dental Hygienists' Association business manager for two years. Zamarro has served as exhibits chair for the MDHA Conference since 2008. She has been active in community service throughout her profession and in recent years has participated in the KidSeal program at Quinsigamond Community College. Zamarro is a longtime member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association.

 Jean E Leonard

Elizabeth A. Baer Achievement Award
Jean E. Leonard, CDA

Jean E. Leonard became a CDA after graduating from the Northeastern-Tufts Dental Assisting program in 1969. Immediately upon graduation, she enrolled in Northeastern University’s Certification in Small Business program, where she graduated with a certificate in small business in 1973. For over 40 years, Leonard has served as a dental assistant and front office personnel in various dental practices in the Boston area. She is an active life member of the Massachusetts Dental Assistants Association and the American Dental Assistants Association. Leonard is still a practicing dental assistant in Concord, MA.


Noriyuke Rajita

John T. Griffin Technician of the Year Award
Noriyuki Kajita, CDT, RDT

Noriyuki Kajita, CDT, RDT, has been named the recipient of the John T. Griffin Technician of the Year Award given to a dental technician for exceptional work in the field. A graduate of Shin-Osaka College of Dental Technology in 1990, Kajita completed his advanced study at the International Dental Academy Lab-Tech School in Tokyo, Japan. In 1998, he relocated to the United States to further advance his career, earning his CDT in 1999. He now serves as a production manager for quality assurance at Cusp Dental Laboratory in Malden, MA, acting as the lead of the CAD/CAM department and serving as the in-house IT specialist.
