Arthur Jeske, DMD, PhD is a professor in the department of general practice and dental public health and associate dean for strategic planning and continuing dental education at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. He also serves as an Evidence Reviewer for the American Dental Association’s Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry and he maintains a private practice in Houston, TX.

This course is based on a new textbook (Contemporary Dental Pharmacology: Evidence-Based Considerations) authored by the presenter. It is designed to provide up-to-date scientific information that can be easily applied to the management of drug therapy in dentistry. In addition to coverage of the "big three" (local anesthetics, analgesics, and antibiotics), attendees will learn how to quickly obtain internet-based information chairside, the role of adjunctive agents, such as corticosteroids, and current information on emergency drugs and non-intravenous routes of emergency drug administration.

After this course attendees will be able to:
  • Understand the current scientific evidence for the selection of local anesthetics
  • Determine the safe and effective use of local anesthetics, opioid and non-opioid analgesics, antibiotics and antibiotic prophylaxis, and adjunctive, and emergency agents
  • Analyze the role of adjunctive agents
  • Review important internet-based resources to guide drug therapy in dentistry
  • Identify how to rapidly access information on adverse drug interactions
