Gretchen Gibson, DDS, MPH is an adjunct clinical assistant professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the director of the special care dental clinics at the Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System.
Treatment planning for seniors often requires assessment and accounting for complex issues. These issues encompass dental, medical, social, and ethical components in varying combinations. However, there is an evidence-based and structured way to approach these each time you encounter an older patient, regardless of the issues. This course will use a case-based approach to walk through an algorithm for treatment planning that will take into consideration various scenarios.
After this course attendees will be able to:
  • List five questions to answer when treatment planning a geriatric patient
  • Identify considerations beyond the dental exam findings that will affect the treatment planning process
  • Summarize issues related to late life depression and dementia that can have an affect on providing dental care
  • Understand the concept of patient-centered care
  • State the principles of geriatric medicine and see examples of how they pertain to oral health issues
  • Determine how prescription medications can affect oral health and dental treatment planning decisions
Recommended Audience: Dentist
