Jean Waitneight, is the Director of Health Services at The New England Center for Children, a residential school for children with moderate to severe Autism.

The course will cover an introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders, including characteristics of its range of presentations, the diagnostic process, and the varied ways in which ASDs may impact interactions with health care providers. This course will also describe some basic supports for patients with autism spectrum disorders, present interventions for uncooperative or challenging behaviors, and offer an overview of case studies on the use of desensitization to improve compliance with dental examinations.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and the implications for the dental team
  • Explain basic supports for patients with ASDs and how they can be used during a dental visit
  • Describe interventions for uncooperative or challenging patients
  • Identify how desensitization can be used to improve compliance with a dental exam
