OSAP: Review of CDC Guidelines and Dental Waterlines Update

Shannon Mills, DDS is internationally recognized as an expert on dental treatment water quality, and was a member of the advisory panel for the CDC Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Health-Care Settings - 2003. Dr Mills retired from PreViser Corporation and Northeast Delta Dental in 2018 but remains actively engaged with OSAP and participates in national and international standards development as a member of the ANSI/ADA Standards Committees for Dental Products (SCDP) and Informatics (SCDI)

The instructor will review key elements of the 2003 CDC Dental Infection Control Guidelines and will provide an overview of dental water quality and the rationale for controlling biofilms in dental unit waterlines. Attendees will review technologies to control biofilm and methods for screening and testing dental water quality will be described.

After this course attendees will be able to:
  • Learn about recent examples of disease transmission in dental settings to understand the importance of implementing effective infection prevention measures
  • Identify the key elements of the 2003 CDC Dental Infection control Guidelines and how they can be implemented in your practice
  • Understand how biofilm colonizes dental water lines and be aware of recent outbreaks associated with contaminated water
  • Review available methods to monitor dental water quality and control biofilm formation in dental water lines
