Virginia Heroux, MS, RDH is a graduate of the Forsyth School for Dental Hygiene where she received a Certificate of Dental Hygiene; the University for Rhode Island where she received a bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene Education; and the University of Bridgeport where she received a master’s degree in science, with emphasis on Nutrition. Virginia has been a dental hygienist and a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association for over 40 years. She worked as a clinical dental hygienist in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, in general and periodontal practices, for 25 years. She has been teaching at Mount Wachusett Community College for the past 14 years, where she instructs students in Head and Neck Anatomy, Pharmacology, and second year clinic. Currently, she is serving as Immediate Past President of the Massachusetts Dental Hygienists Association. She is excited to present to her colleagues today, so please enjoy your lunch, as she discusses the 2017 Periodontal Staging and Grading.

Ms. Heroux will discuss strategies to stage and grade healthy and periodontal patients according to the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions

After this course attendees will be able to:
  • Understand how severity, complexity, extent, and distribution descriptors affect staging of periodontitis 
  • Discuss how direct evidence and grade modifiers indicate periodontitis grading
  • Identify how to stage and grade periodontitis
  • Access tools to assist the dental professional in the staging and grading process
