Debra November-Rider, RDH is the IRB administrator, The Forsyth Institute, adjunct assistant professor and course director for pain management, Forsyth School for Dental Hygiene at MCPHS University, and course and clinical instructor for continuing education in local anesthesia certification for the dental hygienist at Middlesex Community College.
This course will provide attendees with an overview of how to improve and troubleshoot delivery of local anesthesia. A review of the anatomy, injection techniques, the local anesthetic drugs, and recent advances in local anesthesia will be covered. Attendees will demonstrate on a skull, proper angle and needle placement for various nerve block injections, perform a proper aspiration technique, and practice a safe rate of deposit of the local anesthetic.
- Identify critical anatomical landmarks for various maxillary and mandibular nerve block injections
- Demonstrate proper needle placement on a skull for various nerve block injections
- Compare and contrast the different local anesthetic drugs to formulate a safe treatment plan
- Assess causes for inadequate local anesthesia and make recommendations for improvement
- Implement strategies to troubleshoot inadequate or absence of local anesthesia
- Discover the most recent advances in pain control
