Looking Beyond the Oral Cavity: Practical Dermatology for Dental Providers
Dental providers are in a unique position to examine exposed areas of the head and neck during dental treatment. This course is designed to enhance the dental professional’s knowledge of skin anatomy and highlight some of the more common skin conditions involving the head and neck region. The course will focus on identifying lesions such as pigmented growths including freckles, moles, and age spots. The effect of sun exposure to face and lips will be reviewed. The ABCDE’s of melanoma will be discussed to help distinguish a low risk mole from a potentially malignant melanoma. Nonmelanoma skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma will be discussed. Treatment options for some of the lesions will be explored, and when necessary, which suspicious lesions need referral to a specialist.
- Identify the effects of ultraviolet light on the skin including actinic keratosis
- Discuss therapeutic options including how to protect from ultraviolet light and when to refer for suspicious lesions
- Recognize the various pigmented lesions that occur in the head and neck
- Understand how color, shape, and size can aid in identifying the growth
