AN UPDATE ON REMINERALIZING AGENTS AND PREVENTION

This course will present current over-the counter prevention products including sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride and monofluorophosphate dentifrices. It will also discuss the early diagnosis of tooth demineralization and intervention with fluoride (including fluoride varnish and silver diamine fluoride), glass ionomer surface protectants, sealants and minimally invasive products and procedures (including CPP-ACP paste, xylitol and chlorhexidine). Risk assessment utilization in decision-making for restorative care will be discussed and related to recommendations made by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for restorative dentistry care in children and Evidence-Based Clinical Recommendations of the American Dental Association. 

After this course attendees will be able to:

• Explain early diagnosis of enamel demineralization
• Understand preventive regimens available, as well as appropriate intervention with these agents, using minimally invasive techniques
• Discuss pediatric dentistry standards of care using risk assessment in decision-making



EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND MINIMALLY-INVASIVE RESTORATIVE CARE FOR CHILDREN

1:30 - 4:30 pm

This course will discuss the early diagnosis of tooth demineralization and how different approaches to caries management can be applied in your office. Intervention with fluoride (including fluoride varnish), glass ionomer surface protectants, sealants and minimally invasive products and procedures will be presented. Non-surgical restorative approaches including the Atraumatic Restorative Therapy and Hall Stainless Steel Crown techniques will be presented. Techniques for placing esthetic restorations for both anterior and posterior teeth, including zirconium crowns, will be reviewed. Risk assessment utilization in decision-making for restorative care will be discussed and related to recommendations made by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the current scientific evidence for restorative dentistry care in children.

After this course attendees will be able to:

• Explain early diagnosis of enamel demineralization and understand preventive regimens available
• Understand the clinical utilization of traditional, photopolymerized glass ionomer cements and compomers
• Become familiar with non-surgical restorative approaches, including resin infiltration systems, atraumatic restorative therapy, and the Hall Crown Technique
• Understand pediatric dentistry standards of care using risk assessment in decision making
