Tyler Sanslow, DMD graduated in 2017 from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and is pursuing an MPH. He is an active member of organized dentistry, currently serving as Boston District Dental Society Chair, as well as serving on the MDS DEI Task Force and Ethics Committee. He is a past MDS Guest Board Member & MDS 10 Under 10 recipient. Before dental school he was a dental assistant at a pediatric practice in his hometown of Lexington, KY and was also a teacher of English and Spanish at grade schools in Spain and Kentucky. His passion for public health stems from childhood, where he traveled to public health departments across the state of Kentucky with his aunt, a public health doctor. Outside of dentistry Dr. Tyler enjoys being active, including running- he ran cross-country in college, is in a local run club and ran the Boston Half in November.

Individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, agender/asexual/ally or other (LGBTQIA+) have historically struggled with access to oral health care. Progress for the LGBTQIA+ community is one of the leading civil rights issues of our time, with They being named as Merriam Webster’s 2019 Word of the Year. While public health efforts increasingly focus on reducing health disparities and increasing access to care, many areas still lack dental health equity for LGBTQIA+ individuals. It is critical to understand the language and terminology associated with the LGBTQIA+ population in order to address LGBTQIA+ health disparities, social determinants of health and access to care. The health needs of the LGBTQIA+ population are relatively the same as the general population; it is the nuanced approach, considerations and practices that differ in providing inclusive care to the underserved LGBTQIA+ community.
