Caring for the Older Generation
Jamie Collins, RDH is a clinical practicing hygienist and has been in the dental field for nearly 20 years, both as an assistant and hygienist. In addition to clinical practice Jamie is also an educator, has contributed to multiple textbooks and curriculum development, and contributes as a key opinion leader.
Treating our seasoned patients can pose challenges that may affect daily life of the elderly. With the majority of medications listing xerostomia as a side effect, the oral implications of aging and disease management is a common concern. Add in dexterity and mobility concerns the ability to care for oneself often deteriorates drastically.
Having the knowledge to recognize the cause and having solution options to treat the conditions and improve ease of care can create strong trusting relationships with your patients.
