Tiago Amaral, DDS, MSc is a Specialist in Periodontology, graduated from the University Internacional de Cataluña, Spain, where he is currently doing his PhD program and also teaches at the Post Grad program in Periodontology at the University of Lisbon - Portugal.

Federico Ausenda, DDS, MSc graduated dental school from the University of Florence in Italy in 2013. He obtained his certificate in periodontology from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine here in Boston in 2016. He than attended an ITI scholarship at Eastman Dental Hospital in Rome. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and an ITI Fellow. He maintains a private practice in Milan, Italy and is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and an Assistant Professor at the University of Milan.

Daniel Coleman, DMD, MS received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine, Post-doctoral Master of Science, Specialty training and Board Certification in Periodontics from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He is a clinical instructor and lecturer in the department of Periodontology at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine. He was recently recognized as Outstanding Educator of 2019 by Harvard University and the American Academy of Periodontology in part for his work as faculty at HSDM as well as his speaker engagements nationally and internationally, teaching on topics of periodontal health and disease. He has co-authored a textbook entitled; “Non-Surgical Control of Periodontal Diseases” which is used in programs to train new dentists. Dr. Coleman was named one of Incisal Edge Magazine’s Top 40 under 40 dentists nationwide. This course will highlight the current concepts and techniques for providing effective non-surgical management of periodontal diseases in both a lecture and hands-on format. The etiology of periodontal diseases along with skills to help motivate patients to control dental plaque will be briefly reviewed with an understanding that periodontal-peri-implant diseases are systemic. Diagnostic techniques for accurate probing measurements and calculus detection will be discussed coupled with the hands-on use of a novel dental model with a stimulated attachment apparatus. The rationale of periodontal hand instrumentation will be presented with hands-on experience using a universal curette and Gracey curettes. Hands-on experience in instrument sharpening using diamond sharpening cards will be provided. The theory and use of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric ultrasonics will be presented with hands-on exercises using a variety of tips. The emerging role and use of air polishing with the latest agents and supragingival and subgingival tips will also be presented. The effective sequencing of appointments for initial periodontal therapy and the development of an effective maintenance program will be discussed.

In this course attendees will:
  • Understand the etiology of periodontal diseases
  • Improve accuracy in periodontal pocket measurement
  • Practice skills in calculus detection, hand instrument sharpening, scaling, and root planning with hand and power instruments
  • Develop a protocol for comprehensive Phase I nonsurgical periodontal therapy and for creating an effective maintenance program
