As our patient population ages, along with the complexities of managing caries, periodontal disease and prosthetic concerns, concomitant medical issues which can impact dental therapy need to be assessed. A team approach in identifying the patient’s medical considerations allows dental providers to tailor treatment plans that meet the patient’s specific needs. This program will discuss the importance of a thorough medical history and medical risk assessment. Consultations with the patient’s medical team to facilitate appropriate management of the patient’s medications will be reviewed. To facilitate a practical approach to medically compromised patient care, this program will focus on dental management relative to common systemic disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
