Endodontic Microsurgery Outcome Assessment

The probability of success, as evaluated through a critical analysis of the literature, is an important step in practicing evidence-based dentistry. The prognostic data regarding endodontic microsurgery indicate that microsurgical success rates are significantly superior to those of traditional surgery. At the same time, within the surgical technique, each step of the procedure is important to ensure a successful outcome. This presentation will critically review the available literature to evaluate mitigating variables, including the indication for retreatment before surgery, reversal of success over a longer observation period, intraoperative variables such as the use of magnification and illumination, periodontal involvement, root-end management techniques, as well as potential reasons for failure and the expectations from resurgery.
