HIV and Oral Health: What Every Dental Professional Needs to Know
This course provides dental professionals with essential knowledge about HIV and its implications in dental care. Attendees will explore the basics of HIV transmission, oral manifestations of the disease, and evidence-based infection control practices to ensure the safety of patients and providers. The course emphasizes practical strategies for managing the oral health needs of people living with HIV and dispelling common myths to reduce stigma in clinical settings.
Speakers
After this course attendees will be able to:
- Explain the basics of HIV/AIDS, including modes of transmission and the impact of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on disease progression
- Identify oral manifestations of HIV and describe their clinical significance, diagnosis, and management
- Apply CDC-recommended standard precautions and best practices for infection control to minimize risk in dental settings
- Assess risk and respond appropriately to occupational exposures, such as needlestick injuries, including the use of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)
- Demonstrate best practices for comprehensive dental care of patients living with HIV, including medical history review, extra/intraoral examinations, and periodontal monitoring
- Dispel common misconceptions about HIV transmission in dental practice to foster a nonjudgmental and inclusive environment
