Systemic health has a tremendous impact on the periodontal-restorative interface. Diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and other inflammatory conditions can contribute to the rate of disease progression and responsiveness to treatment. Compound these with environmental risk factors, like cigarette smoking or vaping, and you have the “perfect storm” for periodontal destruction. Learning to identify and manage systemic conditions as part of an interprofessional team can improve periodontal treatment outcomes, and more importantly, quality of life.
