It is time to rethink what “thorough” really means in periodontal maintenance. This course explores how hygienists can protect the junctional epithelial seal while still disrupting biofilm, managing risk, and supporting long-term periodontal stability. The course will examine the clinical impact of over-instrumentation, when to choose hand versus ultrasonic instrumentation, and how adjunctive therapies such as low-abrasive subgingival air polishing, stannous fluoride, probiotics, and optimized home care can support a minimally invasive approach. Attendees will leave with practical strategies to preserve attachment, respect the biology, and elevate preventive care.

Speakers

  • Explain the biological function of the junctional epithelium (JE) and its susceptibility to mechanical trauma during periodontal instrumentation
  • Recognize the clinical risks of over-instrumentation, specifically iatrogenic attachment loss in shallow or healthy sulci
  • Compare the indications for hand versus ultrasonic instrumentation in the context of minimally invasive periodontal therapy
  • Discuss the role of adjunctive therapies, such as low-abrasive subgingival air polishing, stannous fluoride, and probiotics, in modern periodontal maintenance
