Many dentists believe selling to a DSO is their only viable path due to higher valuations and limited private buyer demand. In reality—especially in markets like New England—private buyers remain active, capable, and will pay more when transactions are structured properly. This course challenges common misconceptions and provides a clear, practical framework for evaluating all transition options.
Speakers
After this course attendees will be able to:
- List common misconceptions about today's dental buyer landscape, including the perceived dominance of DSOs and the limitations of private buyers
- Identify three primary buyer types – individual dentists, group practices, and DSOs and understand how each impacts value, structure and post-sale outcomes
- Discover how dental practice transactions are financed, including how private buyers successfully acquire practices with up to $5,000,000 in collections
- Understand the true financial outcome of different sale structures, including how purchase price compares to net proceeds after taxes and terms
- Recognize actionable steps to position a practice for a successful private buyer transition including timing, staffing and operational considerations
- Develop a transition strategy that aligns with personal goals, whether prioritizing maximum value, legacy preservation, or gradual exit
