Silver Diamine Fluoride: Defining Its Role in Oral Health Care

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF), cleared by the FDA in 2014 as a desensitizing agent, is widely used off-label to arrest caries. In October 2016, it received Breakthrough Therapy designation for caries treatment. This course examines this minimally invasive approach to caries management and provides practical guidance for incorporating SDF into everyday clinical practice.

Participants will review the scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of SDF as a caries-arresting medicament. Key principles, including thoughtful case selection, informed consent, treatment planning, and clinical application protocols will be presented. Drawing on both current guidelines and clinical experience, the course will also highlight lessons learned in practice, including the importance of careful patient and lesion selection, realistic outcome expectations, and clear communication regarding esthetic considerations and need for follow-up care.
