Community Water Fluoridation (CWF) is one of the most effective, equitable, and cost-efficient public health strategies for preventing tooth decay. However, challenges to CWF can arise quickly, putting existing programs and new fluoridation initiatives at risk.


This course examines the common challenges faced by fluoridation advocates, including the use of scientific claims and public messaging by opponents to influence community opinion and policymakers. Attendees will explore strategies for evaluating evidence, communicating effectively with the public, and responding confidently to questions and concerns.


Designed for dentists, public health professionals, and community leaders, this course emphasizes the important role of trusted local voices in preserving and advancing CWF. Attendees will learn how to collaborate with allied health stakeholders, engage decision-makers, and advocate effectively for the continuation or implementation of community water fluoridation programs.

  • Explain the science of community water fluoridation, its cessation effects, and associated treatment costs
  • Assess local fluoridation challenges and respond effectively with evidence-based communication
  • Build partnerships with community stakeholders to support fluoridation advocacy

  • Communicate the benefits of community water fluoridation to patients and parents for disease prevention
