Advances in cardiovascular care over the past 30 years have extended lifespans, resulting in a growing population of medically complex patients requiring dental care. This course provides a clinically relevant, evidence-based review of cardiovascular physiology, pathology, and pharmacology as they relate to dental practice. Emphasis is placed on understanding cardiac function and dysfunction, as well as the impact of disease and medications on bleeding risk, hemodynamics, and patient stability. Attendees will learn practical methods to improve risk assessment, intraoperative management, and communication with physicians, ultimately enhancing safety and clinical outcomes.
Speakers
After this course attendees will be able to:
- Describe fundamental principles of cardiac function, including perfusion, cardiac output, and hemodynamic regulation, in a clear and organized manner
- Demonstrate practical methods to monitor cardiac function intra-operatively using readily available, cost-effective indicators instead of complex equipment
- Compare and contrast cardiac phenotypes; fit, average, elderly, and diseased, and explain their clinical implications for dental care
- Evaluate the impact of dental treatment including stress, local anesthesia, and pharmacologic interventions on cardiac function and dysfunction
- Differentiate anti-thrombotic medications as anti-platelet or anti-coagulant based on mechanism of action
- Apply evidence-based strategies to safely manage patients receiving anti-thrombotic medications
- Implement practical, evidence-based strategies to manage patients with cardiovascular disease in the dental setting immediately following course completion
