Many of the conditions encountered in oral pathology may be diagnostically challenging to clinicians who do not see them with regularity. This course will help distinguish selected common innocuous lesions from more seldom-seen but clinically significant entities. The hands-on portion provides clinicians with experience performing uncomplicated soft-tissue biopsies under local anesthesia in outpatient settings by allowing them to compare biopsy techniques on synthetic mucosal tissues.
Speakers
In this course attendees will:
- Prepare a differential diagnosis of commonly encountered oral infections, immune-mediated diseases, and tumors
- Develop management strategies including pharmacologic treatment
- Describe characteristic clinical presentation of oral malignant and pre-malignant lesions
- Outline new and established risk factors for oral cancer
- List indications for biopsy and alternative diagnostic procedures
- Compare and perform punch and scalpel biopsy techniques on synthetic mucosa
