Practice Management

Scaling a dental practice into a successful multi-location enterprise requires more than capital. It demands strategic planning, operational infrastructure, financial discipline, and a clear vision for long-term value creation. In this session, experts from Bank of America Practice Solutions and McLerran & Associates will walk through the financial, operational, and lending considerations that evolve as practices scale while exploring how lenders evaluate growing organizations and strategies for scaling sustainably. Beyond growth, the program will offer key insights for future transition planning, covering how practices are valued, what today's marketplace offers in terms of ownership and exit paths, and how to proactively position your practice for a successful transition.

After this course attendees will be able to:

  • Identify the characteristics, financial benchmarks, and operational requirements associated with each stage of multi-location growth, from launching a practice to operating a mature, multi-site enterprise
  • Understand how lenders underwrite growing dental organizations, including debt service coverage, cash flow adjustments, collateral and guarantee expectations, and other organizational risk factors that shape financing capacity, terms, and access to enterprise-level credit as a practice scales
  • Determine an organization's readiness to scale by assessing financial strength, working capital and liquidity levels, provider and staffing capacity, and leadership infrastructure, while recognizing the common financial and operational constraints that stall expansion or erode value when growth outpaces systems
  • Describe the primary drivers impacting dental practice valuations, including key profitability metrics, revenue diversification, geographic location, provider dependence, payer mix, and the operational scalability factors that distinguish a premium valuation from an average one
  • Compare the ownership and exit pathways available in today's marketplace, including continued independent expansion, private practice sales, and DSO or Private Equity partnerships, weighing the trade-offs in valuation levels, deal structures, post-transaction autonomy, and long-term financial outcomes
  • Develop a proactive transition strategy that aligns financial reporting, banking relationships, operational readiness, and personal goals to maximize enterprise value and support a successful sale
