Update and Controversies in the Surgical Management of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology
The surgical management of oral and maxillofacial pathology remains one of the most complex and challenging areas within oral and maxillofacial surgery, requiring clinicians to evaluate a wide range of pathologic conditions that vary significantly in diagnosis, biologic behavior, and treatment approach. This course will provide an evidence-based review of commonly encountered pathologic processes affecting the oral cavity and jaws, with particular focus on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), odontogenic cysts, tumors, and other lesions that require careful surgical intervention. Attendees will explore current controversies surrounding pathophysiology, diagnosis, risk factors, and treatment planning, while reviewing surgical management strategies designed to eliminate disease, preserve facial form and function, and improve long-term patient outcomes.
Speakers
After this course attendees will be able to:
- List the pathophysiologic mechanisms of MRONJ reviewed in the international literature
- Discuss the role of conservative therapy versus surgical resection of MRONJ
- Explain the medical management of patients planned for surgical resection of MRONJ
- Identify the odontogenic cysts most commonly encountered in oral and maxillofacial surgery practice, as well as their clinical and radiographic presentations
- Determine the clinical and radiographic features of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome
- Understand the classification of benign and malignant odontogenic tumors and the changes that have occurred in this classification from 2017 to 2022
- Describe the principles of benign and malignant odontogenic tumor surgery
