Thomas Viola, RPh: With over 30 years’ experience as a board-certified pharmacist, clinical educator, professional speaker and published author, Tom Viola, R.Ph., C.C.P. has earned his national and international reputation as the go-to specialist for making pharmacology practical and useful for all members of the dental team. As an educator, Tom has received several awards for outstanding teacher of the year. Armed with limited and sometimes biased information, amid a growing distrust of traditional medicine, many of our patients choose to self-prescribe and self-medicate. How? With a variety of prescription drugs, OTC drugs, supplements, and substances. Can you identify, manage, and treatment plan effectively for a self-medicating patient? In this course, attendees will explore the dental implications of self-medication and strategies for identifying and managing self-medicating dental patients.

- Identify the most common prescription and OTC drugs used by dental patients to self-medicate
- Describe the dental considerations of commonly used dietary supplements
- Recognize the effects of substance use and abuse on oral and systematic health
- Determine the risks associated with managing symptoms instead of seeking medical care for disease
- Review techniques useful in identifying self-medication in dental patients
- Understand how to successfully manage self-medicating patients

Maritza Morell, DMD: is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist, a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Public health Dentist. Dr. Morell is the Mass Dental Society region six Trustee. She is a Senior Clinical Associate in Pediatric Dentistry at the Boston Children's Hospital and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine since 1999. In addition, she owns 2 pediatric dentistry and orthodontics private practices in Andover and Lawrence, Massachusetts.
