Do’s and Don’ts of Silver Diamine Fluoride

Does the application of SDF arrest cavitated caries lesions as effectively as other treatment modalities? This course will help participants to learn about the most up to date evidence-based guidance on the use of 38 % silver diamine fluoride (SDF) for dental caries management in children, adolescents, and geriatric patients, including those with special health care needs.  Participants will learn established clinical guidelines to use SDF, indications, and contraindications for the use of SDF, treatment planning, clinical applications, and coding for this procedure. Discussion on minimally invasive options will be discussed and how they can be integrated for the treatment of difficult to treat pediatric patients, patients with medical special health care needs and certain adult/geriatric patients. Participants will also learn about other minimally invasive techniques like interim restorative restorations, frequent applications of fluoride varnish and Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique (SMART).

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss evidence-based guidance for using silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to treat and prevent dental caries
  • Describe case selection and materials
  • Discuss patient education information useful for the use of minimally invasive techniques in pediatric and geriatric patients
  • Summarize the benefits and safety of SDF application in the context of dental caries management in arresting cavitated caries lesions in the primary dentition
  • Discuss the efficacy in management of root caries in geriatric patients
  • Review documentation, coding, and billing of silver diamine fluoride (SDF), interim therapeutic restorations (ITR) and Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique (SMART).
