“Still Working the Bugs Out?": Antibiotic Prescribing and Prophylaxis
Thomas Viola, RPh serves the professions of Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, and Dental Assisting as a clinical adjunct professor for ten dental degree programs, published writer, and a professional speaker.
Dental care incorporates anti-infective agents as a measure to reduce the risk of infection. Knowledge of anti-infective agents provides dental practitioners the ability to make sound clinical decisions when assessing risk of infection after dental procedures as well as choosing the most appropriate anti-infective agents for administration. This course will focus on the etiology of acute oral infection and the management of such infections with both palliative and anti-infective agents, including potential risks, adverse effects and contraindications. Special emphasis will be placed on current guidelines for prophylaxis of infective endocarditis and joint replacement infection.
- Describe the pharmacology of the most common anti-infective agents used in dentistry
- Explore the principles of antibiotic prescribing and administration in dentistry
- Discuss recommendations for antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental procedures for cardiac, orthopedic, and immunocompromised patients
