Knowledge of anti-infective agents provides dental practitioners the ability to make sound clinical decisions when assessing risk of infection after dental procedures as well as choosing the most appropriate anti-infective agents for administration. This course will focus on the etiology of acute oral infection and the management of such infections with both palliative and anti-infective agents, including potential risks, adverse effects and contraindications. Special emphasis will be placed on current guidelines for prophylaxis of infective endocarditis and joint replacement infection.

After this course attendees will be able to:
  • Describe the pharmacology of the most common anti-infective agents used in dentistry
  • Explore the principles of antibiotic prescribing and administration in dentistry
  • Discuss recommendations for antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental procedures for cardiac, orthopedic, and immunocompromised patients
